It therefore appears that the expression of certain viral functions is dependent upon the physiological state of the cell at the time of infection. That the effect of a tumor virus on its host cell depends upon the operation of certain cellular functions has been previously shown by Temin'1 and Bader"2 for the RNA-containing Rous tumor virus. Summary.-A combined study by radioautography and immunofluorescence showed that the induction of cellular DNA synthesis in polyoma-infected cultures of mouse kidney cells occurs in productively infected cells.
